Velanidia

German World War II Observatory

At the top of Mount Crithina, high above the picturesque mountainside village of Velandia, during World War II the Germans built an observatory using forced Greek labor. From there, the Germans kept watch -- and reported on -- ships and aircraft that crossed the Myrtoon Sea and the Strait of Elafonisos. The spectacular view is worth the strenuous climb! Drive to Velanidia and follow a dirt road upwards until it becomes a foot path.
